I grew up understanding that Love does not have to be perfect to be powerful.
My parents were not perfect, and neither was my childhood. Yet the love they gave me shaped who I am in ways I continue to discover today.
My father grew up during a time of political hardship and uncertainty. To him, love meant making sure his family was safe, healthy, and cared for. He valued family, loyalty, culture, and resilience. While there were things he could not teach me, his quiet dedication showed me that love can exist even when it is imperfect.
My mother loved differently. She is kind, emotionally intelligent, and endlessly giving; she often puts her family's needs before her own. She gave me warmth, freedom, encouragement, and a sense of safety that allowed me to grow into myself.
One memory has stayed with me for years.
I remember a small butterfly storybook that cost only four dollars. Even then, I noticed a moment of hesitation before she bought it for me. Money was not abundant, yet she chose to give me that small piece of joy anyway.
Every weekend, despite being tired from work, she still took us to the park. At the time, those afternoons felt ordinary. Looking back, they became some of the most precious memories of my childhood.
